SpectraVET Performance of the Week: McLain Ward

Nobody else can ride a high-speed high-intensity jumper and make it look like an equitation round like McLain.

Oh, McLain — we’re not even going to attempt to disguise our giant HN crush on you. Watch McLain Ward and HH Carlos Z make short work of the 1.50 m Championship Jumper Classic at Wellington’s Winter Equestrian Festival Week 3:

If that’s not a living, breathing example of why good equitation actually works, I don’t know what is.

Go McLain, and go riding!

SpectraVET Classic Perf. of the Week: TR Dual Rey

Cutting horse aficionados and novices alike will find their jaws dropping with this replay from 2003: check out the great cutting horse stallion TR Dual Rey.

One of the top influential stallions of the modern age of cutting with offspring consistently netting big checks and wins all over the country, TR Dual Rey was just as impressive to watch in the pen himself. There’s nothing prettier than watching a cutting horse and all of its raw ability and athleticism turned loose on a wily calf to show his stuff, and TR Dual Rey does not disappoint.

His incredible lightning-quick reflexes and preternatural ability to read a cow was showcased in an incredible performance to capture the reserve championship at the 2003 National Cutting Horse Association Derby Open level. (Yep, it’s the one where TR Dual Rey gets on his knees.)

Now that’s truly a horse who will defy the laws of physics to get his job done — getting so low to give the cow “the eye” that he actually gets down on his knees for a moment, never breaking that intense stare.

Go cutting, and go riding!

Spectra VET Performance of the Week: Steeplechase Save

You know it’s good when the announcer says “He’ll never recover from that!” AND THEN HE DOES.

Seven-year-old Killultagh Vic was the 2-7 favorite for Sunday’s Grade 2 Novice steeplechase at Leopardstown on the Emerald Isle and was plucking along just fine at the front of the pack… until total disaster struck.

The horse’s striding, takeoff, and form were perfect to the final fence and had seemingly cleared the way for victory when his front feet when completely out from under him, and the horse was suddenly splayed out on the turf like a bear rug on the cabin floor.

Veteran jockey Ruby Walsh managed to remain completely centered over the horse throughout the chaos, which in horse racing time seems to last an eternity, but the ferociously competitive pair returned to their feet and dug in.

Walsh never regained his right stirrup, and finishes the race still in jockey form using one stirrup and pure muscle alone. Oh, did I say finish? I meant WIN.

Despite getting passed by two solid competitors, Killultagh Vic manages to overtake horses Blair Perrone and Lord Scoundrel  in just a matter of a few hundred yards to win by 3/4 of a length. Some are calling it one of the most miraculous comebacks in horse racing history, and they may be right.

“It was a good performance to get back up and win, wasn’t it?” Walsh told The Irish Times. “He’s got some turn of foot, and that’s with me flapping up and down on him.”

In other words, in addition to Walsh being one of Ireland’s most legendary riders, he also made one of history’s best recoveries, and did it with an obscene amount of modesty. And in case you’re wondering, I’m sorry to say he’s sadly not on the most eligible bachelor’s list, with a wife and three daughters. If you want to learn more about Ruby Walsh, you can follow him on Twitter and check out the three part YouTube series on him here. Killultagh Vic will get some rest in preparation for Cheltenham’s JLT Chase in March, where he’s currently the 4-1 favorite.

Go Vic and Ruby, and Go Riding!

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: The Household Cavalry

The Musical Ride of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment wowed the crowd at Olympia’s London International Horse Show last week!

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment performed its impressive and extensive musical ride at the London International Horse Show, also called “Olympia” for the name of the venue. While we’ve all seen drill performances before, nobody has mastered the art quite like the Household Cavalry:

I can’t decide what was my favorite: the horses lying quietly flat on their side while the entire coliseum clapped to the beat of the music as the troop galloped about the arena, the amazing basketweaving-inspired criss-crossing maneuvers, or perhaps the drum horse that chilled out quietly at the center while chaos reigned around him.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is a primarily ceremonial unit, making up half of the Household Cavalry as a whole (the other half has front-line combat duties, and most men will serve in both units during their service). The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is perhaps most famous for its daily ceremonies at Horse Guards at Buckingham Palace. The musical ride is performed at agricultural shows and military reviews.

Go riding!

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Laura Graves & Verdades

Laura Graves and her Verdades proved that they’re an up-and-coming duo to watch, capturing their first National Championship in Wellington, Florida over the weekend. Watch their outstanding Grand Prix tests!

Modified from a USEF press release:

Laura Graves and her Verdades increasingly demonstrate that they’re a truly world-class pair that we should all be keeping an eye on: helping to win team dressage gold as well as an individual silver at the Pan-Am Games, as it turns out, is just the beginning. Over the weekend, the pair marked scores of 76.460%, 77.137% and 75.125% in the Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and Freestyle, respectively, at the U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions in Wellington, Florida. This is Graves’ first ever National Championship title, crowning a stellar 2015 year.

Graves and Verdades won the first two segments, finishing second to Steffen Peters and Legolas 92 in the freestyle — which if you ask me, is pretty much a victory in and of itself.

“He’s been feeling really good all week and tonight was a demonstration of how much horse I have now,” explained Graves in a USEF press release. “I am still on a sharp learning curve and am still learning to ride that horse in that environment. This was our first outing [since the Pan American Games in July] and was a perfect opportunity to figure this out now going into our World Cup qualifiers. He is amazingly athletic and when he goes like that the feeling is unreal. We had some mistakes tonight, but I can’t hold that against my horse.”

Speaking to the feeling of securing her first National title, Graves said, “I’ve never been close to this position before so it’s a real honor. This is a really encouraging place to be as we begin 2016.”

Watch Laura Graves and Verdades perform in their two Grand Prix tests. (Unfortunately, the pair’s freestyle is not yet available on video.)

Go Laura, go Verdades, and go riding!
