Fire Destroys Ontario SB Barn, 40+ Horses Dead

A devastating fire destroyed a barn housing over 40 horses at a well-known Standardbred training facility in Ontario, Canada on Monday night.

Images and video from the fire at Classy Lane Stables in Puslinch, Ontario are chilling: clouds of thick smoke rise from the long barn which housed up to 46 Standardbred harness racers in training.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, what is known is that the fire broke out around 11:00 PM on Monday, January 4, 2016 and was spotted by a neighbor who called it in to authorities. Owners and trainers who happened to be on-site at the time rushed to the barn but could do nothing against thick clouds of smoke to help the horses trapped inside.

“The smoke was so dense that you couldn’t go near it. They probably all suffocated before they perished,” stated owner/trainer Ben Wallace according to CTV News.

While the barn housed 46 horses at capacity, at least two of the stalls were empty at the time of the fire, though a total count of lost horses is still unknown.

Classy Lane Stables opened its doors in May of 2003 and quickly gained the reputation for being one of the best training facilities in Canada. With close proximity to Woodbine, Flamboro and Mohawk race tracks, as well as including its own training track, jog trails and state-of-the-art facilities, Classy Lane housed some of the best horses in Canada and North America, trained by some of the top talent in the harness industry. Among those lost in the blaze was Apprentice Hanover, a champion valued at over $1 million.

50 firefighters from five departments were called to the scene and fought not only the dense smoke and intense flames, but temperatures well below freezing. Because of cold conditions, water had to be trucked in to the site, further hampering efforts to control the fire.

Our thoughts are with the owners, trainers and horsemen whose beloved horses and livelihood were affected by the fire, as well as to the owners of Classy Lane Farm, Jamie and Barb Millier, who were traveling in the United States at the time of the blaze.

Go hug your horses.

KY Performance Products: Wacky Weather Blanket Tips

The weather this year has been particularly unseasonal, which can make appropriate blanketing a real challenge. Kentucky Performance Products offers some quick tips.

Horse-Supplements-Kentucky-Performance-Products-horse-blanketing-Large-e1451311261136

From the Kentucky Performance Products Tips & Topics Blog:

This crazy weather makes blanketing a real challenge. Blankets on, blankets off. Light, medium, heavy. Hood, no hood. Oh my!

Here is a great rule of thumb to follow when choosing the right blanket weight. Remember to take wind chill into consideration if your horse lives outside.

  • When temps fall within the range of 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, use a lightweight blanket.
  • When temps fall within the range of 40 to 50 degrees, use a medium-weight blanket.
  • When temps fall within the range of 30 to 40 degrees or below, use a heavyweight blanket.

If you turn your horse out in a blanket, be sure it is waterproof.

HN Best of 2015 #4: Mama’s Tough Love

Sometimes, kids just need to learn to treat their elders with respect.

It’s no secret that foals can be energetic and playful, even just downright sassy (for instance, we recently shared this video of a Paso Fino foal gaiting like crazy). But a good parent knows when to intervene when things get out of hand. Watch what happens when this naughty colt decides that it’s time to beat up on mom (note: you must be logged into Facebook to view this video):

HN Best of 2015 #7: The Sales Video of the Year

The horse seems super-sweet and lovely but the real star of this video is the 4-year-old kid holding the camera.

Earlier this week we posted this amazing lease video. A couple days later (when it rains it pours!) another gem showed up in our inbox. It’s a sale video for an 8-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding named Paddy, and it has the cutest color commentary EVER.

Reader Kris spotted it on on the Virginia Equestrian Facebook page and sent it our way with the note, “The horse is adorable but the 4-year-old videoing his mom is HILARIOUS! She is such a patient Mom too :-)”

Just watch:

“Mommy, why do you say hit the red button?”

“Mommy, why do you have to have it on record?

“Mommy, now can you do the running? And a zigzag.”

“Mommy, let me tell you something.”

“Mommy, on this camera do the pictures come out? Where do they come out of?”

“Mommy, did you know horses are very good fighters?”

..and the kicker…

“I need to go poop. But I can hold it.”

DYING.

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: The Household Cavalry

The Musical Ride of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment wowed the crowd at Olympia’s London International Horse Show last week!

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment performed its impressive and extensive musical ride at the London International Horse Show, also called “Olympia” for the name of the venue. While we’ve all seen drill performances before, nobody has mastered the art quite like the Household Cavalry:

I can’t decide what was my favorite: the horses lying quietly flat on their side while the entire coliseum clapped to the beat of the music as the troop galloped about the arena, the amazing basketweaving-inspired criss-crossing maneuvers, or perhaps the drum horse that chilled out quietly at the center while chaos reigned around him.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is a primarily ceremonial unit, making up half of the Household Cavalry as a whole (the other half has front-line combat duties, and most men will serve in both units during their service). The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is perhaps most famous for its daily ceremonies at Horse Guards at Buckingham Palace. The musical ride is performed at agricultural shows and military reviews.
