Chest-Deep Snow No Problem for These Furry Friends

This video of four minis and a giant puppy plowing their way through over three feet of fresh, fluffy snow will melt your heart.

Playing follow-the-leader is pretty fun — especially when you’re not the one doing all the work! Watch these four minis and their Great Pyrenees friend enjoy a fresh New Hampshire snowfall (and nearly get submerged in the process). Odd Horsey Items Only WE Get Excited About

When you walk into an Ace Hardware do you feel like a kid in a candy store? If so, you’ll be able to relate to Lila Gendal’s latest column.

Many of us have our own niches in life, which ultimately shape and mold our entire worlds. So much that we start seeing life through a slightly different pair of lenses. For many of us, our passion dictates our lives, and we actually start thinking, dreaming, tasting and hearing according to that love that drives us. The baker who started baking when she was six years old. She dreams about beautiful loaves of bread, freshly baked croissants and more. Walking down the baking aisle in the grocery store really gets her excited. Opening a brand new bag of King Arthur Flour reminds her of Christmas morning. We might not all understand the baker’s way of life and love affair with cooking and baking, but we certainly can appreciate an obsession.

As an avid equestrian, I have discovered over the years that I am easily engrossed when it comes to certain odd little items. We are not all the same way. We are not all interested in the same items, but for better or worse, here’s a short list of weird horsey related items that I truly get excited about!

Double-ended snaps.

Ah, yes, the inevitably hard to find and often goes missing, and even occasionally gets stolen double-ended snaps. We find these at the end of cross-ties, holding water buckets up, and the list goes on and on. When you travel to an “away” event, where you might be stabling your horse for a night or two, you will often need a double-ended snap. Perhaps you do, or perhaps you do not, but I never like to leave home without these guys. Seriously, every time I go to a hardware store, or Walmart, I like to stock up on double ended snaps… they make me smile.

NEW brooms.

Perhaps if physical labor scares you, then you might find it difficult to relate on the subject of sweeping. However, for many of us who grew up as barn rats, sweeping aisles day in and day out, to the point where you think the broom would start sweeping on its own, because you’ve programmed the hell out of it. Regardless, when NEW brooms arrive at the barn, or you splurge at the feed store on some random Thursday afternoon and purchase several new brooms, life suddenly becomes seriously exciting. I almost can’t handle the eagerness. No joke. New brooms bring joy throughout countless barns.

Electrical Tape.

Yes, I admit, I really enjoy ordering, finding and searching for electrical tape, particularly when it comes in a traditional green and yellow shade, as those are the colors I rock on cross country. Weird? Perhaps. Practical? ABSOLUTELY! Not only is electrical tape relatively cheap when compared to the cost of an entry fee, or a shoeing bill, but once you’re favorite personal barn items are adorned in your colors, often times (but not always) those special crops, or favorite tail brushes are left alone by other wandering souls because they know which color belongs to which rider. Funny how that works out!

I could keep going, but I’m dying to hear what must have items are on YOUR lists, and why?!

My name is Lila Gendal and I am 28 years old. I am from Vermont and have been riding horses since I was 6 years old. I have been eventing since I was 10. I have been riding and training with Denny Emerson for the last 7 years. My goal is to compete at the upper levels someday. I’m currently leasing an awesome ISH gelding named Theatre Royal (owned by Gayle Davis), and we are going Prelim. When I am not on a horse or in the barn I am likely working in my office on what I like to call Equine Media… or social media for equestrians and equestrian websites.

Horse for Sale: $3,500. Sales Video: Priceless.

The horse seems super-sweet and lovely but the real star of this video is the 4-year-old kid holding the camera.

Earlier this week we posted this amazing lease video. A couple days later (when it rains it pours!) another gem showed up in our inbox. It’s a sale video for an 8-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding named Paddy, and it has the cutest color commentary EVER.

Reader Kris spotted it on on the Virginia Equestrian Facebook page and sent it our way with the note, “The horse is adorable but the 4-year-old videoing his mom is HILARIOUS! She is such a patient Mom too :-)”

Just watch:

“Mommy, why do you say hit the red button?”

“Mommy, why do you have to have it on record?

“Mommy, now can you do the running? And a zigzag.”

“Mommy, let me tell you something.”

“Mommy, on this camera do the pictures come out? Where do they come out of?”

“Mommy, did you know horses are very good fighters?”

..and the kicker…

“I need to go poop. But I can hold it.”

DYING.

Equestrians Anonymous: This Week’s Top 5 From the Forums

We’ll bring you the five best conversations from our forums each week. Check out Equestrians Anonymous and let your voice be heard!

BeFunky_Untitled.jpg

If you haven’t been a regular on Horse Nation’s forum board Equestrians Anonymous, then you’re really missing out. Picture the tack room or the barn aisle at the end of the day: You’re hanging out with your barn buddies, speaking that magical language of equestrian that no one at home will ever understand, and it hits you that you are among your people. That’s what Equestrians Anonymous is like, and here are the top five conversations going on right now:

1. “Help with shedding??” (Horse Health)

User ponyyprincess asks if there’s a good way to stimulate shedding in a horse that doesn’t want to let go of that winter coat…even though all of his barn mates are shedding like crazy. Leave your thoughts and suggestions on the thread to help a pony princess out!

2. “What do you drive to haul?” (The Unstable Life)

Kristen Kovatch recently broadened her trailer-driving horizons when she hauled a heavy load with a single-rear-wheel truck as opposed to the dually she was used to driving. She wants to know what everyone else is driving, and the merits of each.

3. “Question on colt color” (Ask Anything)

User abolt just adopted a colt from a wild horse sanctuary! And it’s got some pretty unique markings. Take a look at the photo and join the debate on just what that colt’s color ACTUALLY is.

4. “HELP! Horse drops his head after jumps!” (Hunter/Jumper)

User MOAR LEG! is taking lessons over fences on “a grizzled ol’ OTTB gelding” who has begun dropping his head on the landing and ditching his rider. Seeking advice! This is an older thread but has a lot of good ideas–add your own thoughts, or browse for ideas for yourself.

5. “Public opinion on blanketing…” (Ask Anything)

Another oldie but goodie with relevant information: JamieJennings asks us all for our thoughts on if/when to blanket. As usual, there’s a wide array of answers, ranging from no blankets at all to blankets over clips at 50 degrees, the SmartPak Blanketing App makes a guest appearance and everyone goes home happy. It’s not too late to weigh in on this one!

So what are you waiting for? Join any of these conversations, or start your own–we’re all crazy horse people here.
