‘Oh Crap’ Monday: Turning Is Overrated

Monday already is the crappiest day of the week, so it only makes sense that we make things official. Here’s our latest “oh crap” moment.

Sometimes you get an awesome opportunity to participate in a run of a lifetime. Jessica Gilbert, friend of Horse Nation, got just such an opportunity when she had the chance run her OTTB Cowboy Swagger at a barrel race at the Pendleton Round-Up.

Cowboy Swagger, affectionately known as Swaggs, is becoming a seasoned barrel horse. He won the barrel racing championship at the 2019 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover with then-owner Fallon Taylor, and Jessica has been showing him regularly.

However, on this particular day, Swaggs decided turning was overrated. He said no thank you to Jessica’s leg and tried to make his own choices.

Fortunately, Jessica stayed on and still left the make-shift arena giving her horse a pat, knowing that there will be another chance and another run. But we’re pretty certain Jessica was thinking “oh crap” (and maybe a few other choice words) in that moment!

Go forth and tackle your Monday, Horse Nation.
