Standing Ovation by Ovation Riding: The Right Horse Initiative

Every Friday, Horse Nation teams up with Ovation Riding to spotlight an individual or organization doing good work in the horse world. Today we recognize the Right Horse Initiative, which awarded a $100,000 grant to New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program to rehome Louisiana Thoroughbreds.

The Right Horse Initiative has awarded New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program a $100,000 grant to expand its program into Louisiana. New Vocations is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that focuses on aftercare, retraining and rehoming for Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. The grant comes from the WaterShed Animal Fund and its Right Horse Initiative. It will support opening a New Vocations facility in Louisiana and rehoming more than 50 retiring racehorses a year.

“At The Right Horse Initiative we are focused on identifying areas where we can make the biggest impact for at-risk horses,” said Christy Counts, President of The Right Horse Initiative. “New Vocations has been a pioneer and champion in racehorse aftercare, so we are thrilled to be able to empower them to make a difference in this important community.”

The new facility in Louisiana will require collaboration from a number of racetracks, management companies, jockeys, owners and trainers. It will bring New Vocations’ total facilities up to eight in five states. New Vocations currently has facilities in Laurelville, Ohio, Lexington, Kentucky, Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, and Fort Edward, New York, with the majority of its horses being placed through the Ohio and Kentucky facilities. Over its 25 years of operation, New Vocations has helped over 6,000 racehorses find second careers and homes.

“We saw that there is a critical need in Louisiana to provide retiring racehorses a place to rehab and eventually be rehomed, as well as continually increasing demand for adoptable Thoroughbreds nationwide. We are thrilled to be undertaking a collaborative effort to provide good options for horses in the region,” said Thoroughbred Program Director, Anna Ford.
