SpectraVET Performance of the Week: McKinzie

We’re well into 2018 now… which means it’s time to start looking at Kentucky Derby hopefuls! Watch McKinzie dominate the Grade III Sham Stakes.

While it’s just one race among the multitude of stakes that could be influential in a horse’s career, the Kentucky Derby holds a certain mystique and prestige, an undeniable achievement for a racehorse and his connections. The road to get to the Derby is arduous, with prep races to contend with and multiple routes to qualify.

While it’s still plenty early to get our picks in, I’d just like to remind readers that I put a pin on American Pharoah in 2015. Okay, so it was April, just a month before the Derby, but still! Gimme at least a little bit of credit.

And yes, it’s mighty early to be calling McKinzie, but this colt makes it look awfully easy: with just a couple of taps from Mike Smith in the pilot’s seat, this Bob Baffert trainee just cruises home.

McKinzie is a son of Street Sense and is owned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman.

The one-mile Grade III Sham Stakes at Santa Anita is good for 10 points to the winner on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. McKinzie is now sitting second in the qualification with a total of 20 points; there’s plenty of prep ahead, however, and there’s bound to be some big changes!
