Today’s Mythbuster Monday was inspired by a dog conversation that turned equine. We decided to dig deeper, look at the science behind it, and separate myth from fact. So, here it is — is shock training effective for horses? Does it teach the desired result? Is it an attention and control method? Read on to find out!
Myth: Shock “collars” are an effective training method for horses

Shock collars are remote devices designed to deliver an electrical stimulus intended to interrupt behavior through positive punishment (adding something unpleasant to reduce behavior). While common in some dog-training circles, are they a recognized tool in equine training science?
McGreevy and McLean’s article, “Punishment in Horse-Training and the Concept of Ethical Equitation,” explains the shock collar approach does not align with how horses actually learn. Horses form learning through clear, consistent associations between a cue and its outcome, meaning the timing and predictability of reinforcement are critical. The authors emphasize that the most reliable and welfare-compatible training system is negative reinforcement, commonly seen in traditional pressure-and-release methods, where pressure is applied and released the moment the horse offers the correct response. This creates a clear, repeatable communication system that the horse can understand and anticipate.
In contrast, the use of aversive stimuli such as those associated with shock-collar-style training introduces significant problems in learning clarity. McGreevy and McLean highlight that inconsistent or poorly timed punishment creates confusion, conflict behaviors, and anxiety because the horse cannot reliably connect the stimulus to a specific, correct response. Importantly, punishment does not teach the horse what to do instead; it only suppresses the unwanted behavior. In practical terms, even if an aversive stimulus temporarily stops a behavior, it fails to provide the horse with a clear alternative action, making the learning process unstable, unreliable, and inconsistent with established equitation science principles.

The study demonstrates that when horses experience unpredictable or aversive stimuli, their bodies respond in a measurable way consistent with stress activation, not neutral learning. Importantly, these responses are not momentary alone, they can extend beyond the immediate training interaction, suggesting that the horse’s emotional and physiological state remains affected even after the stimulus has ended.
In relation to the myth that shock-collar-style training could be an effective method for horses, these findings are important because they show that aversive stimulation, regardless of the specific tool used, directly impacts the horse’s stress system. Elevated stress is not just a welfare concern; it also interferes with learning processes, memory formation, and the ability to build trust with a handler. This means that even if an aversive stimulus temporarily alters behavior, it does so by increasing stress rather than improving understanding, making it an unreliable foundation for consistent, long-term training outcomes.

Their article recommends that all horse training should be grounded in established learning theory, meaning horses learn most effectively when handlers use clear, consistent cues paired with predictable reinforcement. Within this framework, reinforcement-based systems, particularly negative reinforcement such as pressure-and-release, are highlighted as the most reliable and welfare-aligned method for training horses.
The International Society for Equitation Science also emphasizes that excessive, inconsistent, or poorly timed aversive stimulation can significantly reduce both welfare and learning clarity. They note that punishment-based methods are inherently unreliable because they require precise timing and consistent application, which is difficult to achieve in real-world training environments. When timing is off, horses may associate the aversive stimulus with the wrong behavior or even the handler, leading to fear, confusion, or avoidance responses. While aversive stimulation, including punishment-based tools, can suppress behavior in the short term, the evidence shows it does not reliably teach correct responses and often increases stress, confusion, and inconsistent performance. Importantly, there is no scientific body of research validating shock collar training in horses as an evidence-based method. Instead, the closest relevant literature consistently indicates that aversive approaches risk undermining learning clarity and welfare when compared to reinforcement-based training systems.
Finally, there are significant ethical implications with the use of devices such as shock collars. Many consider them inhumane, arguing they punish symptoms rather than addressing the cause, causing fear and potential behavioral damage.
