‘Oh Crap’ Monday: That Went Horribly Wrong

Matt Mathews decides to try to teach Kail Lowry to barrel race…

… and it does not go well.

Monday already is the crappiest day of the week, so it only makes sense that we make things official. Here’s our latest “oh crap” moment.

Watching someone learn to ride is always a gamble. Watching someone learn to ride on camera, with confidence levels wildly exceeding experience, is a gift. And when that someone is Kail Lowry and the instructor is Matt Mathews (whose teaching style can best be described as supportive chaos with a southern accent), well… you buckle up and say a small prayer for the everyone involved.

This video has everything: enthusiasm, questionable steering, verbal encouragement that may or may not qualify as emotional damage, and a rider who is clearly rethinking every life choice that led to this moment.

Matt is trying. Kail is trying. It ends… not well. It’s one of those beautiful, unfiltered equestrian moments where ambition meets reality at speed, and reality wins by a landslide.

To be fair, Kail was a pretty good sport. She did come in and attempt to do the work that goes along with riding a horse (even if her reaction to picking out the hooves was hilarious). And Matt tries to explain the caliber of horse she’s about to ride (“This is a professional barrel horse. Okay. So this isn’t just like cutesy — this ain’t the 95-year-old ribby horse that you rode on the beach on your little vacation. This horse has a job. He knows his job. He loves his job.”)

Go forth and tackle your Monday, Horse Nation.
