Celebrity Equestrians: Miranda Lambert

The country western singer just added a new four-legged family member to her entourage.

Miranda Lambert has been a well-known animal advocate and recreational equestrian since at least 2009. In an interview with People, she noted she’s loved horses since she was a child growing up in Texas, watching rodeos from the sidelines.

As soon as she was able, Lambert built herself a menagerie of equines on her Oklahoma ranch. In 2009, she owned three horses: Playboy, Zeus Troubadour, and Baldy. Back then, she claimed she was more of a recreational rider but that she was dabbling in barrel racing. She trained with friends near her ranch, and her only goal was, “I eventually want to get comfortable going faster.”

Sometime around 2014, Lambert began showing Cobs and Gypsy Vanners. In a recent post, Lambert profiled Welsh Cob Ellie as “a feisty red head” that “really taught [her] to be brave.”

In 2018, she racked up the blue and red ribbons, taking home Reserve Grand Champion honors at the Feathered Horse Classic.

“It has been one of the best weekends of all time. My horses performed well, and I smiled so much my face hurts,” Lambert wrote on her Instagram with a series of photos from the event. “I am still green and have so much to learn but I’ve come a long way in 4 years…It’s just a reminder to take time out for what you love and what recharges you.”

She competed frequently for at least five years before taking a break from riding in 2019.

But Lambert hit the Gypsy Vanner circuit again in 2023, posting, “First horse show since 2019,” accompanied by a photo of herself and her horse, Gibson, which also featured in her music video “Settling Down.”

And Lambert certainly doesn’t appear to be settling down, adding ranch horse “Cool” to the family on March 12.

“He is one of the sweetest horses I’ve ever met. He does it all with grace and patience and has already taught me so much. In the last few months I’ve picked up the hobby of mounted shooting and in the process I’ve made some amazing new friends including this handsome fella. He came at the perfect time in my life when I needed a challenge and to try something new.”

Lambert is currently being trained by “5 time World Champion, cowgirl, prof-shooter” Kenda Lenseigne.

Go riding.
