SpectraVET Performance of the Week: 11 for 11

The incredible filly Songbird added yet another victory to her perfect career record by capturing the Grade I Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing on Saturday, September 24.

“A picture of perfection!” described race caller Keith Jones at Parx Racing of Bensalem, Pennsylvania. We’re running out of superlatives to describes Songbird, the undefeated three-year-old filly who extended her record to 11 wins in as many starts with her weekend win in the Grade I $1 million Cotillion Stakes. Under a perfect hand ride by Mike Smith, the Medaglia D’Oro filly cruised under the wire easily, putting away her most challenging field to date: Grade I winners Cathryn Sophia and Carina Mia could have upset Songbird’s perfect record but they proved to be no match at all.

Owned by Fox Hill Farms and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Songbird sets her sights next on the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She’s already a Breeders’ Cup champion, having won the Juvenile Fillies championship in 2015. A second championship would be a fitting crown to such a royal filly, but Songbird may have some tough competition in store with older great fillies such as Stellar Wind and Beholder — we’ll be watching the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Championships with great interest!

In a year that seems to have no clear standout star as far as colts — the Pennsylvania Derby, held on the same day as the Cotillion, saw a slow-maturing colt named Connect top Triple Crown stars Nyquist and Exaggerator — Songbird provides a rallying point for all of us who love horse racing, and she continues to impress and delight with every start.
