2014 NAJYRC remix: Catherine Chamberlain’s gold medal-winning ‘Harry Potter’ freestyle.
The 2015 North American Junior & Young Rider Championships kicked off yesterday in Lexington, Kentucky, so it seems fitting to revisit one of last year’s most memorable performances.
Catherine and her Dutch gelding, Verdicci, followed up on Individual and Team Gold Medals in the Young Rider division with a Gold in the Freestyle, earning a 72.525% for their Harry Potter-themed test.
A self-proclaimed “nerd,” Catherine explained afterward that she had a blast riding the test.
“It was the first time performing this freestyle and it was really fun,” Chamberlain said. “I tried to make it difficult. In past I have had more simple freestyles and I wanted to show off a more difficult freestyle.”
Fun fact: There were actually two Harry Potter freestyles at NAJYRC last year! Molly Paris finished third in the Junior division with hers.
Since last year’s Championships, the 20-year-old California-based dressage wunderkind has been keeping herself busy. Most recently she was selected to represent the United States in the Young Rider European Tour in Hagen, Germany, last month, with Avesto van Weltevreden (“Vito”).
Now she’s back in Kentucky to defend her title, once again representing USDF Region 7, which includes riders from California, Hawaii and Nevada.
Best of luck to Catherine and all the riders competing at this year’s NAJYRC, which is certainly an accomplishment in and of itself. You can keep up with all the action here.
