SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Austin Shepard

Austin and Bamacat won the Houston leg of the Mercuria World Series of Cutting, held February 27-28. Watch them in action!

There’s nothing cooler to see than a cutting horse working a cow–they’re basically pure, raw instinct in the form of a horse that knows exactly what it’s supposed to do. The riders don’t mess around–even the biggest, toughest-looking cowboys keep a good hold on that saddle horn because no matter how good of a seat you might have, it won’t stand up to some of the turns that the horse can make. When that rein hand drops down to the neck, you know it’s show time.

Watch the winners of the Open division at the Houston leg of the Mercuria World Series of Cutting, Austin Shepard and Bamacat:

The Mercuria World Series of Cutting takes place all over North America, from Texas to Canada, from California to Ohio. Co-sponsored by the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) the World Series offers open and non-pro competition, crowning a world champion in each division at the World Finals held in conjunction with the Futurity in December.

Bamacat, known around the barn as “Julio,” is a son of legendary cutting horse High Brow Cat. Julio’s first crop of foals is just starting under saddle while their sire continues to rack up title after title across the country–in Houston, Julio and Shepard marked a 224 score in the preliminary round with this performance scoring a 223 to win the finals.

Bamacat has his own Facebook page, where you can ogle at photos of him gettin’ low:
