The Twelve Weeks of Riding: A sing-a-long
Melissa Owens, age 15, composed this reinterpretation of “The 12 Days of Christmas” that will be an instant classic amongst trainers and lesson-takers alike.
Melissa writes, “Hello! It being just a few days until Christmas, I was inspired to write the Equestrian’s Version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. I even went so far as to sing it for Horse Nation! Hope you enjoy it!”

On the first week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Keep your hands still!”
On the second week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Butt in the saddle!”
On the third week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Lower leg steady!
On the fourth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Look straight ahead!”
On the fifth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Heels down!”
On the sixth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Supple to the left!”
On the seventh week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Add more leg!”
On the eighth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Loosen up your shoulders!”
On the ninth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Check your diagonal!”
On the tenth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “More release!”
On the eleventh week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Sit up straight!”
On the twelfth week of riding, my trainer said to me… “Extend his trot!”

About Melissa: I’m 15 years old and I compete at the local level of hunters and jumpers with my Haflinger rescue mare, Tiara, and my mom’s Icelandic gelding, Broddi. Tiara and I are aiming to try our hand (hoof?) at eventing next spring, while Broddi and I are hoping to compete in some rated jumper shows.
