Video: Much Macho Man wins 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic

After coming second last year, the 5-year-old ridden by veteran jockey Gary Stephens finally got his due in yesterday’s race at Santa Anita.

Much Macho Man is owned by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and trained by Kathy Ritvo, who made history by becoming the first woman to win the $5 million championship race.

The horse’s racing history is something of an “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” type narrative. As a 3-year-old he contested all three legs of the Triple Crown, his best finish being third to Animal Kingdom and Nehro in the Kentucky Derby. As a 4-year-old he finished half a length behind Fort Larned in the Breeder’s Cup Classic. His record this year has been hit or miss, qualifying for the Classic by winning the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 29. Persistence finally paid off yesterday, when he pulled off a photo finish win.
