SpectraVET Classic Performance of the Week

Each week we spotlight a history-making moment by an equine legend–like Bill Steinkraus’ Individual Gold Medal victory at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Steinkraus was the first American to earn this title, riding the horse Snowbound. This video shows his winning round and is narrated by another show jumping legend, Bernie Traurig. Traurig notes that these were the biggest jumps ever built at any Olympic Games.

Steinkraus rode in a total of five Olympic games. In addition to his Individual Gold, he won a Team Bronze at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki; a Team Silver at the 1960 Olympics in Rome; and a Team Silver at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He was listed to ride in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo but his horse suffered an injury beforehand.

In addition to his accomplishments in the saddle, Steinkraus was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 1987, has served as president of the  USET and the World Cup Committee and as director of the USEF, and has judged at the Olympics, Pan American Games, World Championships and World Cup Finals.
