SpectraVET Classic Performance of the Week

Each week we spotlight a history-making moment by an equine legend–like this video of Rachel Alexandra’s spectacular win at the 2009 Preakness Stakes.

Rachel Alexandra was the first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years, since Nellie Morse in 1924. It was a thrilling race: Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird made a late charge but came up short, placing second. Rachel Alexandra was also the first horse to win from the 13th post position and became the first Kentucky Oaks winner to also win the Preakness.

The superfilly went on to be named 2009 Horse of the Year before her retirement in 2010. In 2012 she gave birth to a colt, Jess’s Dream, by Curlin, who was Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008. Jess’s Dream is the first-ever offspring of two Preakness Stakes winners, Curlin having won the race as well in 2007.
