Weekly CANTER Wishlist

Like so many citizens of Horse Nation, my buddy Kaitlyn Jansen is addicted to browsing CANTER listings. So I was like, “Hey Kaitlyn, why don’t you make yourself useful and compile your top picks into an HN column?” And she was like, “OK.”

Kaitlyn’s affinity for off-the-track thoroughbreds is shared by equestrians across the country, and for good reason. After their career at the track is done, many OTTBs are able to move on to successful careers as sport and pleasure horses. When it comes to heart and athleticism, OTTBs have it in abundance, and there’s no better place to find the ex-racehorse of your dreams than CANTER.

So, every Monday, Kaitlyn is going to send me links to her top 5 CANTER picks of the week. Maybe one of them will steal your heart!!!

PA-T2242-02 Baywind Moon, 2007 bay gelding, 16.1+ hands.  Sport horse superstar in the making!  We love the massive shoulder on this guy, and we were definitely impressed with the suspension and collection he displayed when he jogged for us.  “Moonie” has been with his current trainer since he was a yearling, so you get all the history on this one.  While DRESSAGE is a definite possiblity for him, there’s also a lot of EVENTING potential there – his exercise rider tells us he can gallop 2 miles easily and without even getting winded.  Clean up in the Dressage phase with him, then sit back and enjoy the ride for the Stadium and Cross Country phases!  $2000.  Teddy (Theodora) Jacklin 717-865-6520. (Grantville, PA)

Vandalia is a beautiful 2008 chestnut filly.  She is 16.2 hands and very classy. Vandalia is by Grand Slam and out of Madame Ivette and has a fantastic pedigree with Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Gone West and some interesting European bloodlines as well. This lovely lady is 100% sound and she has only raced 7 times and is just not interested in being a race horse. She has very clean legs with no blemishes, nice conformation and poise.Vandalia is super sweet and not “marrish” at all. Her trainer says she loves attention, to be groomed and is an easy keeper. She is an out of your pocket kinda gal with no vices and just a joy to be around.  Vandalia has a good mind, wants to please and is a quick learner. She would need an intermediate handler to help transition her to a new career but with some additional schooling she could easily excel at any discipline. Vandalia is located at the Trackside Training Center in Louisville, KY.

Update 8-28-12: Vandalia has been moved to her owners farm in Arkansas but is still available-same contact info!

$4,000 negotiable

PA-T2387-09   J T Morgan, 2005 chestnut gelding, approx. 16.2 hands.  Invest in this guy!   With a nice Sport Horse build, this massive guy has three quiet, quality gaits.  We’re told he is “a natural” rounding to a soft snaffle bit and is polite enough for young riders to ride him on the farm. A nice horse to handle, easy going in nature with no vices or issues, this guy should make a solid prospect. Suitable for nearly any discipline, there’s no need to pick just one – here’s you chance to try everything from Hunters to Dressage, from Eventing to Fox Hunting. This is just a nice all around guy, retiring sound with no injuries. Trainer needs stall space! $2499.  Lacey Williams 609-420-9185. (Oxford, PA)

PRICE REDUCED!!   PA-T2370-08    Lauren M C, 2008 bay mare, 15.3 ½ hands.  Eventer or Jumper Prospect!!   An athletic filly with a stellar personality, we think this girl will be a fun, straight forward prospect.  Her trainer is very hands on, she’s the primary exercise rider and groom, taking meticulous care of her horses, so you’ll get a unique perspective on this girl and how well she behaves in the tack.  An “in your pocket” type, this girl is ridiculously sweet and polite, making her an easy choice to fall in love with.  Lauren raced two days before we took her listing and she jogged out very evenly for us – no known issues or vices.  This girl has certainly been practicing her “Look of Eagles!”  $1200.  Amy Randolph 717-865-8005. (Grantville, PA)

T11-3218-10. “Saarcasticly” is a 6-year-old, 17.1h bay gelding

Looks, gentleness, and great manners come together in this flashy bay package. Saarcasticly is a great mover, but he is done racing on track. He’s been enjoying farm life, and is ready to move into a second career.
