Did you watch the Preakness? I’m sure I’m not the only one out there in HN who commenced making a giant public scene–screaming, jumping up and down, doing cartwheels…

Every year going into the Preakness, the country holds its collective breath as we hope against hope that the Kentucky Derby winner will step up and carry the torch of Triple Crown hope a little further. And almost every year, we get let down. This year, we were perhaps even less hopeful than usual, shushed by all the trackside talking heads telling us that I’ll Have Another couldn’t win at the shorter distance. As a result his underdog win tasted that much sweeter.

This country sure could use a Triple Crown winner right now. Morale’s low, and sometimes having a figurehead to rally behind gives everybody a boost. (See: Sea Biscuit.) No pressure, I’ll Have Another, but we’re looking at you.
