Rob Gronkowski, of New England Patriots Fame, purchased a share in racehorse Gronkowski prior to the horse’s run in the 2018 Belmont Stakes, and got the privilege of meeting his namesake in the paddock. So meta.
Celebrities get a lot of stuff named after them. (Usually, I feel like it’s things like cocktails and sandwiches, which for me would be the pinnacle of success.) Few celebrities get the ultimate honor of a racehorse named after them, however, and when those celebrities throw their support behind their namesake horse, it’s a great way to lend a little star power to the horse world.
That’s basically what happened when Gronkowski met Gronkowski: that’s New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, meeting the horse named after him. Gronkowski (the horse) won several races in Europe before being pointed to the Kentucky Derby, which he was forced to miss due to illness.
He certainly showed up in the Belmont Stakes, however, running an impressive race from last to second behind winner Justify. Gronkowski (that’s Rob) purchased a share of the horse prior to the race, and got the ultimate honor of meeting his namesake in the paddock:
