SpectraVET Performance of the Week: The Haskell

The winner might be announced in the video title, but we challenge you to really see this one coming.

It’s hard to find a video of any of the major stakes of the Thoroughbred racing calendar that doesn’t explicitly put the name of the winner in the title, so for spoiling it already, we apologize.

However, the 2017 running of the Haskell Invitational was such an exciting race that we’re confident you won’t mind. Really, we dare you to see this one coming — Monmouth Park’s big stakes of the summer is a nail-biter all the way to the wire.

Hope you didn’t blink, because you’d miss Girvin’s incredible drive to the wire to capture his first Grade I win. This is also the first Grade I win for trainer Joe Sharp. Girvin is owned by Brad Grady and was piloted in this race by Robby Albarado.

The 2017 three-year-old season seems to be playing out a bit like last year — there’s no one standout star. (Of course, we were a bit spoiled in 2015, weren’t we?) With some of these contenders already slated to come back in the Travers at Saratoga at the end of this month, we’ll certainly be treated to a thrilling summer of horse racing.

Through the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” program, Girvin has now punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the fall. We hope to see another great race like this one.
