Best of JN: Lines in 5-7-5 If Your Horse Can’t Even

Six horses with great brakes and even better haiku skills.

Sure, your horse is pretty much a pro at doing lines in five strides or maybe even a bending seven, but did you know that horses are also good at other types of related distances? It’s a little known fact that horses can whip out a surprisingly effective haiku. Yes, even your trusted steed can haiku when you least expect it.

Today, I’ve rounded up some poems written by horses when they’ve experience a bit of the “can’t even’s.”

My therapist says

I shouldn’t commit to things

Listen little girl —

there is no force of nature

Hey up there… Mom, um…

It’s a wee bit early for

the no stirrups phase.

Ohhhhh no! Oh no no no!

The poles are lava, aren’t they?

THE POLES ARE LAVA!

Pretty sure the judge

saw you hold that pole up there,

but good try my bro.

Have you heard the news?

Judges want more expression

in the hunter ring!

I for one can’t get over how articulate some of these horses are in a crisis. It’s a good thing they’ve got the mental fortitude to write such eloquent poetry, because I for one am way more focused on survival when the poles are flying!
