Friday Morning Standing Ovation: Blue Star Equiculture

Each week we honor an individual or organization that is making a difference in the horse world. This week we salute Blue Star Equiculture, a draft horse sanctuary in Palmer, MA.

Lori Holder-Webb, who nominated Blue Star for a Standing Ovation, explains, ” They take in some of the hardest horses to find homes for: the big ones. Retired carriage horses, drafts that were abandoned by the Amish, and more. They are generally of the belief that horses are happier when they have a job, even if they’re too old or infirm to have a *regular* job, so they have some of the horses work the farm for their CSA, some of the continue to pull carriages or wagons at parades and civic events, and some of the horses help out with an educational mission that they’ve developed with the University of Massachusetts. I think that Blue Star has managed to find homes for something like 200 draft horses since they started operation.”
