In the News: ‘Heiress Athina Onassis de Miranda competes against Bruce Springsteen’s daughter in showjumping event ‘

The UK’s Daily Mail has some great photos of the two young ladies squaring off at London’s Olympic Park.

They’re contenders in the London leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour, which kicked off yesterday and will culminate in a €450,000 Grand Prix on Saturday.

The competition is taking place in what was, only a few weeks ago, a parking lot (or “car park” as the Brits would have it) that has since been converted into a show venue with seating for 3,000 people.

Horse & Country shared this time-lapse video of the show grounds being constructed:

A who’s-who of the world’s top showjumping riders will be fighting to claw their way higher in the Tour rankings, which is currently topped by the U.S.’s Laura Kraut after the Tour’s first three competitions. In addition to Kraut, the U.S. is represented by Aimee Aron, Annie Cook, Saer Coulter, Laura de Gunzburg, Lauren Hough and Jessica Springsteen.

Springsteen, of course, is the daughter of rock ‘n’ roll legend Bruce Springsteen, who was on hand to cheer for his 21-year-old daughter during yesterday’s competition.

Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa watch their daughter compete.

After the 2012 Olympics Bruce purchased the horse Murka Vindicat W, who won gold with British rider Peter Charles, for Jessica. They placed 27th in yesterday’s class with four jumping faults.

The Daily Mail article pits Springsteen against Athina Onassis de Miranda, the only surviving descendant of her grandfather, Greek shipping heir Aristotle Onassis. Athina, age 28, returned to competiting after recovering from a spinal injury after she fell from her horse last November.
