As the adage goes, “if at first you don’t succeed…”
As 2019 begins to take shape, many of us have set goals of self improvement. According to several sources, 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by February.
As equestrians, our horses have conditioned us well to deal with failure. We know that really the only way to get past is to quite literally get back on the horse. As the great George Morris once said, “You either go to the hospital, or you get back on. Hospital or on.” As we face our inevitably-pending resolution failures, we need to keep that in mind. No one truly fails until they decide not to try again, until they decide to not get back on that horse.
This video provides inspiration to those of us who may need a reminder of the type of grit and persistence that is needed when faced with failure. This young rider does not back down when her pony has trouble with a fence that is clearly constructed out of horse-eating barrels. She keeps trying and trying until she gets it. So in 2019 when you find yourself on the brink of giving up, remember the determined girl on the chestnut pony and kick on!
