There is no doubt that in recent years we are seeing a huge revival of Off-the-Track-Thoroughbreds (OTTB) in successful second careers as pleasure and sport horses.  Horsemen have found that not only can these elegant horses have a life after racing, they can excel as hunters, jumpers, polo ponies, and dressage or event horses and even in jobs you might never expect to see them in like barrel racing and as working ranch horses.

Oxford Feed & Lumber will focus its annual Purina HOW (Horse Owners Workshop) meeting, February 25, 2016, on the revival of the OTTB.  Turning for Home, Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Racehorse Retirement program, will join us for the event along with some of their local partner farms. They will address various aspects of working with retired racehorses.

Steuart Pittman, president of the Retired Racehorse Project, will discuss his group’s role in finding second careers for retired Thoroughbred racehorses and their enormously popular Thoroughbred Makeover which provides an incentive to retrain a Thoroughbred for just about any discipline.

Also joining us will be MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, a Federal 501(c)3 organization, that buys slaughter bound ex-racehorses and adopts them into good homes as pleasure and sport horses,

Presenting the topic from a veterinarian’s viewpoint, Unionville Equine Associates will dispel some of the common myths regarding racetrack injuries and discuss proper rehabbing procedures.

The HOW meeting will also include a presentation by Purina on equine weight management, for both over/underweight horses.

The event, to be held at Union Fire Hall, 315 Market St., Oxford, PA 19363, includes light fare, “goodie” bags, door prizes and raffles. It is a free seminar, but please RSVP at 610-932-8521.

Four attendees will win 10 free bags of Purina feed and everyone is eligible to enter a national contest to win one of (24) $200 Ariat gift cards.
