NickerDoodles: Learning to ‘Drive’

Melanie Eberhardt illustrates another classic case of horse/human miscommunication.

Of course.

Melanie explains the inspiration for this week’s comic and shares an anecdote about her own horse’s “learning to drive” experience:

“I spent the weekend watching Live Oak International and all the driving classes. What a blast! I learned to drive a few years ago and it’s as much fun as it looks. I taught my Arab gelding to pull and admit that at first he didn’t seem to be having fun. But he obliged because he was a good boy. Then I had an idea to make it fun for him. A friend gave me four sets of sleigh bells and put them around Kain’s ankles. Those silly bells made all the difference for Kain. Now he too loved pulling the cart (or at least enjoyed scaring the bejesus out of the other horses as he passed by).”

About Melanie: I am an artist in Atlanta. When I’m not painting, I’m riding horses. I have 3 retired Arabians and a snotty pony at home. They keep me on my toes. Three years ago I bought a young OTTB straight off the track. My new fella, Bubba, and I are learning dressage. Sadly, I’m the weak link on Team Bubba, but I learn something every time we ride so it’s all good. I started NickerDoodles to document the horsey antics that abound within my world. I’m very fortunate to balance my life with things that I love – painting and riding – and NickerDoodles gives me a forum to share. If we’re not laughing at our horses and ourselves, we’re probably crying. I prefer to laugh! I hope everyone enjoys NickerDoodles.
