Friday Flicks: Vintage celebrities and horses

Is that Elvis on a horse? Why yes, yes it is, and there’s much more where that came from in this week’s column by Horse Nation’s film critic Amanda Ronan.

There is something about a vintage photo, isn’t there? I personally find them fascinating, perhaps just because I think that every line and shadow were “orchestrated” or “captured” rather than photoshopped.

Here are a few fabulous vintage photos I’ve found of celebrities and horses.

First off, we’ll start with the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis.

If Elvis is an American King, then the next two lovely ladies can only be called a Princess and a Queen. I present to you Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.

Taylor has been quoted saying, “Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses” but her two costars in the epic film, Giant (1956), Rock Hudson and James Dean may just be the exception.

But perhaps you want to see even more glamour? Well, then check out the President-tempting Marilyn Monroe, Bianca Jagger being escorted into Studio 54 by a man wearing nothing but a painted on
tuxedo, and none other then the 1955 Lady Godiva, played by Maureen O’Hara.

About the Author

Amanda’s experience with horses is just as eclectic as her taste in movies.  She has dabbled in almost every discipline from eventing to team penning to fox hunting.  She started riding when she was 8 with her local 4-H club in Western performance events.  She moved on to the AQHA circuit with her Quarter Horse, “Aggie,” when she was 12 and he was a green 2 year old.  Through college she held a working student position at Seahorse Sporthorses, owned by Terri Adams, where she was introduced to the wonderful world of show jumping and eventing.  Along with Aggie, who just turned 20 years old, she has two OTTBs in her herd named “Gump” and “Lizard.”  Amanda continues her jumping training with Ms. Adams and works on that necessary evil also known as dressage with Mimi Burch of Blue Moon Farm.
