Another trick for white horses--or any horse--for when the weather does not permit a full body wash: The Tail Bucket. This is a plastic bag in which you can place the whole tail, add water and shampoo, secure the band that holds the bag closed, then use your hands on the dry outside of the bag to scrub the tail/water combination inside the bag to clean the tail. When you clip the bottom off the bag, then pour more water into the top of the bag, the tail is rinsed with NO water on you, the horse, or anywhere except the floor. You can even drain the water into a bucket so absolutely no water goes on the floor, either. This is an ingenious product. I have The Tail Bucket starter kit, and it's pretty slick.

I've discovered that you can use GOOP hand cleaner to whiten a yellowed grey mare tail--or any white area on any horse--before the show. Mare tails are especially hard to clean b/c they pee on them, but the GOOP works wonders. Thickly lather it into a DRY tail--I mean, really slather it on everywhere--let it sit for 5 mins, then hose it off EXTREMELY well. Then, shield your eyes from the glare. Do this before the show b/c it takes more time than plain washing.
