What about the leasing option? That's a stepping stone between just lessons to full-on-ownership. A partial lease, where they help cover some board, some vet, some shoes, some misc, and with a 30-day cancellation notice, is a great way for families to ease into the idea of ownership without as much liability as was dumped on you with poor Fred. My first horse was sold to my parents by my trainers, but they still used him as a lesson horse to help offset the costs and make it easier for my parents to afford. There's always a middle ground to help families - especially non-horsey parents - to get into it.

I agree 100%!! Anyone thinking of buying a horse needs to have a strong understanding of the high cost of owning a horse well (it takes money, people!). If we protect buyers who aren't ready to commit , we'll also eventually change the market forces that produce too many horses right now. I've told a friend more than once what my 7 horses cost me per year (and he can do the math for one horse) and he's held off buying a horse for his daughter, who has oddly enough passed through her horse-frenzy stage already.
