Not bad for a first-timer! your legs and seat looked alright (although you were in a very deep-seated saddle - I'm mean and won't let beginners ride in one that deep, creates bad habits!), but you did the rookie arms - very straight out and up, with next to no bend in the elbow. In saddle seat we do want our hands higher than dressage (but still in line with the horses mouth), but we also want a nice natural bend in the elbow and very soft hands.

I'm glad you liked it - I've always ridden Saddle Seat and Saddlebreds (and therefore think dressage is redicuoulsly easy in comparison, especially since I like my horses responsive to the slightest twitch AND supernova hot all at once!), and am so glad to see that there are sport horse people out there willing to give our style a try!

You should see if you can try a 5-gaited horse some time - the only thing I can compare the rush of a full-blown Rack to is maybe driving a supercar at it's full speed!

Glad you had a chance to ride with Jo Cornell, she's one of our industry's finest instructors with a HUGE personality. I've taken several lessons with her in Kentucky and out of my old barn in CA. My current gelding Denny actually lived at her farm between the ages of 1 & 2.

Saddlebreds are some of the most spoiled horses in the world and we would NEVER sore them. Denny sees the accupuncturist and the chiropractor more than I do!

I'm unfortunately getting out of the industry for now (just graduated college & my parents won't pay much longer), but it's straight up addicting. I'm contemplating going into the industry as a professional because I love it so much. Saddlebreds are the sweetest bravest horses I've ever met as a breed; my first ASB greets me by licking my whole head & Denny throws an absolute fit if I walk by him without stopping to at least pet him. Saddleseat Morgans and Arabians can also be entertaining but nothing compares to the breed that was BRED to go Saddleseat.

Racking a Saddlebred is very similar to tolting an Icelandic; if you haven't ridden an Icelandic, you'd love them. They're basically tiny Saddlebreds that think they're huge & awesome. Hitting full speed on a truly square & sound racking ASB is unlike anything you can imagine; many people compare it to driving a Rolls-Royce or Ferrari.

Thank you for such a great post about our breed and I encourage you to take a few more lessons, it's a wonderful workout and loads of fun!

Although I now am past my riding days, I have spent most of my life around Saddlebreds. In the 'dark ages' I did ride hunters so I know the feeling of both. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A SADDLEBRED! The feeling you get riding an average one is over-the-top; a great one, as Simon Cowell would say, WOW, WOW!

As for soring, it's not done. First, we want Saddlebreds to trot; a sored horse won't do that. Second, we want them happy, using their ears and being bright. Enough said.

Take advantage of the trainers' offers through Equestrian Life. You'll miss the opportunity of a lifetime if you don't. Just be prepared to fall in love.

Thanks, Jo, for sharing with the original writer. As she said, you're a great lady and a real ambassador for the breed we love.

Firstly, there is a program where anyone can get a *FREE* riding or driving lesson on a Saddlebred. Here's a link to more info:
http://www.equestrianlife.com/freelesson/

Secondly, when you go, ask if you can ride a 5-gaited horse and get to try a slow-gait and rack. It is nothing like trotting or cantering - its a blast!

I am SO glad you posted this! I've wanted to try riding a Saddlebred for a long time, and I have no excuse, because there's a barn five minutes from my house. I'll be getting the bug all over again soon since a huge SB show will be starting here in a couple weeks (St. Louis Charity). I figured it's harder than it looks, since that's certainly true of H/J, Lol! I have to say, I really couldn't see the difference between your "bad" and "good" passes, but your teacher was a riot. Loved her metaphors! Thanks again for the education and entertainment. :D

I love it there but we just had a bad day.. Our dressage was Soooo bad and I had a confidence reducing schooling earlier in the week, so I didn't even jump.. I instead fell on my not~yet~permanent boob while walking up the trailer ramp, so I opened a bottle of wine and spent the rest of the day crying and laughing. Lol I'll send you an email.. Glad you had fun.. It is the most amazing event.. All said I adore it and will try again for sure (and I only live 5 min away)

What happened? Why were you feeling sorry for yourself?!? Uh-oh.

I LOVED Flying Cross; it was my first time there. The stadium was fun--loved the little cross-country element in the middle--and the cross-country courses were super, so educational. We jumped clean stadium but had a dumb pilot-error on cross-country--we blew past a skinny, oops--but my horse came off the course feeling so confident. This was only his third prelim and we got a chance to try our hand at such a wide variety of fences. I will definitely be going back in the future!

48north, that's a good question and one I was curious about myself. I think soring is a predominantly TWH thing, as is excess padding. I think everyone knows that I'm SUPER outspoken about the soring issue. The horse I was riding was flatshod and I didn't see any evidence around the barn that the trainer used artificial means to exaggerate her horses' gaits. If I had, I would have been outta there!!!

Saddlebreds are not sored unless someone is doing it illegally. The motion and gait all depend on their shoeing and feet, and if they are lame or sore it is very apparent. I have been riding saddlebreds for almost 8 years and it is VERY hard to ride, let alone show a Saddlebred that is sore. They are usually spoiled rotten and treated better than most children!
