The Idea of Order: Define ‘Horse’

HN illustrator Morgane Schmidt is back this week with a definition of “Horse” that may not be Merriam-Webster approved but, as any horse owner will tell you, is true nonetheless.

About the artist: Morgane Schmidt is a 28-year-old teacher/artist/rider/show announcer who still hasn’t quite decided what she wants to be when she grows up. A native Floridian, she now lives in Reno, NV, where she’s been able to confirm her suspicion that snow is utterly worthless. Though she has run the gamut of equestrian disciplines, her favorite is dressage and her plans this year in include pursuing her USDF bronze medal. Visit her website at www.theideaoforder.com.

Your drawing reminds me of what Havannah, my HOL/TB mare, did last summer: she put her left rear leg through the bars of her stall door, shredding her leg like hamburger meat. She was hanging from that leg when I went out to feed breakfast. The resulting vet emergency call was the easiet part of the injury: weeks of twice daily bandage changes followed, which lessened some to daily, then every other day, etc. Not to mention the cost. I probably spent more on the injury than I paid for her. But the injury did not kill her, though it could have, so as you say in your cartoon she will have sufficient time to perfect her death. Thanks for the laugh to ease the sting left in my pocketbook from last summer. :D
