In St. Louis, near the former Busxh estate (Called Grant's Farm - a GREAT day trip!) in what was a suburb 100+ years ago, there are mares & foals on roadside fields, as well as at least one hitch.
We have a paired team at Alfred U, and I will tell you that it's way easier to deal with them as a pair of horses than to deal with them as individuals. They do everything together--they graze side-by-side on their proper sides as though they were hitched. I feel that teams tend to learn to rely on each other moreso than riding horses--so I totally understand leading/bathing/doing anything two at a time!
