Let’s Discuss: What’s your horse’s favorite treat?
Does your horse’s dessert palate tend toward plain vanilla preferences (apples, carrots, peppermints) or something more exotic? Tell us in the comments section.
Photo: My horse Amadeus will eat anything, including but not limited to the Cool Ranch Doritos Laine is feeding him here. The girl that’s currently riding him gives him almonds as treats–she calls it his “healthy snack” since he tends toward serious chubbiness.

Our most recent OTTB wasn’t fond of apples or carrots but LOVED pears and dried pineapple. He also loved Lipton iced tea, no lemon please.
My horse loves the yellow and pink stageplanks cookies, are not very common but I can find them in some of the off the main road convenience stores. He will push me over for them, which is rough when he is 17.2.
Alfie is a good disposal for all the pears we have from our tree every fall, but he absolutely loves loves LOVES Bob’s soft peppermints. I’m pretty sure he’d do anything for them.
My horse eats pretty much anything. He really loves a whole orange and gatorade! He also ate some watermelon rind the other day that was filthy and left over from another horse that didn’t think the rind was tasty.
My mare loves Cherry Sours! She can sniff them out!
My OTTB loves everything. Apples, carrots, horse-approved cookies, but really loves Diet Coke more than anything. I can’t imagine that is good for him so I never let him have it, but if someone leaves one lying around, it’s gone, and he will go to great lengths to get it!
Hi cd,
)
I’m curious – how does your horse drink the Diet Coke he steals? If he drinks from the can or bottle, how do you get a horse to do this
Bastian loves the Paddock Cakes treats in the “Gimme S’more” flavor, by far his favorite treat. He is also a Mt. Dew drinker and I give him some at horse shows before we go in the ring so he has a little pep! lol
My horse now will eat almost anything, I try to stick to “normal” horse treats, but he does enjoy the occasional oreo. My previous horse was crazy for bananas, if I started peeling one near him he would immediately perk up and smack his lips!
Golden Grahams – and in the winter I get him carrots with tops (it’s the only really green thing he has for several months)
