Any day now, supermare Zenyatta is set to foal at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky. Meanwhile her former jockey, Mike Smith (or whomever runs his Facebook page) is pretty excited about it.
In the past two hours, the “Mike Smith Jockey” Facebook page has posted no less than four Zenyatta updates, including a snapshot of the mare in a snowy paddock, a fan-submitted Zenyatta tattoo pic and notification that owners Ann and Jerry Moss have arrived in Kentucky to await the foal’s birth.
During a storied career together, Smith piloted the 17.2 hand mare in 17 of her 20 career starts, including an historic victory in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic–making her the first mare to win that race.
They were defeated only once by Blame in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, for which Smith tearfully blamed himself.
Zenyatta’s estimated due date is tomorrow, March 9, and when that foal hits the ground it’s likely Smith may suffer a mild brain explosion.
In the meantime you can follow along with the anticipatory fervor on his Facebook page.
